2022 Recap

2022 Camel City Women's 800m Race Video

The women’s Camel City Elite 800m was presented by Total Sports US.  Ajee’ Wilson was the athlete to watch, as she owns the JDL facility record of 1:59.26, which she set in 2019.  Maddie Kopp of Under Armour District Track Club handled the pacing of the first 400m with a 59.5 second split.  Ajee’ Wilson and her training partner, Charlene Lipsey, were right on Kopp’s heels and had gapped the collegians by 400m.

Just behind the Adidas duo, the collegian were led by Lindsey Butler of Virginia Tech. Butler would finish third in 2:05.03.  Butler, Valery Tobias of Texas (2:05.33) and Isabella Giesing of UMass Lowell (2:05.76) would all set a mark to qualify them to the NCAA D1 National Championships, but both Butler and Giesing would run a faster mark later in the season.

Ajee’ Wilson would pick up a $7000 payday, which included $6000 for the win and a $1000 bonus for running sub 2:02.

2021 Recap

2021 Camel City Women's 800m Race Video

The 2021 Camel City races were obviously a little different during Covid.  With no spectators in the facility, it definitely had a different vibe.  For recruiting of pros, we tried to focus on athletes who were relatively local and didn't have to fly to the meet.  We also didn't hire pacers and instead offered bonuses at intermediate stages of the race to get things going.

Jazmine Fray got things going and took the pace out at 29.5 and 60.9.  The pace was a little slower than we had hoped, but there was a good pack together through 600m.  At 600m, Rizk and Segrave would pass Fray as she stepped off the track and as they pressed the last lap.  Segrave would power into the lead on the backstretch and get to the line in first.  Behind her Rizk would easily finish in second place followed by three collegians.

1.  Segrave, Hannah - New Balance - 2:04.70 ($6000)
2.  Rizk, Julia - Under Armour District TC - 2:05.36 ($4000)
3.  Lally, Alanna - Temple - 2:07.33
4.  Keegan, McKenna - Villanova - 2:07.67
5.  Fazio, Brooke - Richmond - 2:07.70
6.  Hutchins, Aleeya - Wake Forest - 2:08.85
7.  Howell, Michelle - Under Armour District TC - 2:09.68 ($400)
8.  Kuntz, Emma - Furman - 2:10.94
-- Fray, Jazmine - Under Armour District TC - DNF ($500)

2020 Recap

1.      2020 Camel City Women's 800m Race Video

The women’s Camel City Elite 800m presented by BB&T featured the 2019 World Championships silver medalist Raevyn Rogers, as well as one of the best HS 800m runners of all-time, Athing Mu.

The pacing request for this race was 58-59 seconds at 400m, with Rizk delivering them a little quickly, but no one ever got on her shoulder, as Athing Mu was the leader at 400m in 60.13s.

Mu would hold the lead through 600m and get challenged by Butterworth at the bell, with Rogers a little over a full second behind.  Mu would hold off Butterworth until about 100m to go.  At that point, Rogers was still in third place but was closing on the leaders.  Rogers would pass Butterworth in the last 15 meters to take the win by a tenth of a second.  Mu would fade in the homestretch and finish third, missing her HS facility record by a tenth of a second.

Behind them, Kopp would nip Watson at the line for fourth place.  Unfortunately, none of the collegians ran well enough to qualify in this race.

  1. Rogers, Raevyn – Nike – 2:03.15 ($6000)
  2. Butterworth, Lindsey – New Balance – 2:03.25 ($4000)
  3. Mu, Athing – Unattached – 2:04.08

2019 Recap

2019 Camel City Women's 800m Race Video

The women’s Camel City Elite 800m presented by BB&T would be one of the highlights of this year’s event.  Ajee’ Wilson would headline the event with training partner Raevyn Rogers.

Georganne Moline would handle the pacing duties for the second year in a row and would take them out comfortably in 28/59 for the first 400m with Ajee’ close behind.  When Moline stepped off, though, Wilson would keep her foot on the gas, passing 600m in 1:29 before blasting a 29.5 last 200m to break the facility record and flat track world record by running 1:59.26!  And she looked comfortable doing it!

Behind her, defending champ Hanna Green would nip Raevyn Rogers at the line for second.  Behind them, high schooler Athing Mu, who was in third place at 600m, would fade slightly over the last lap, but still hold on for 5th in a new HS facility record.  Right behind her, Bissah would run 2:03.99 which, after applying the conversion, would stand as the #1 TFRRS mark in the NCAA throughout the rest of the season.  Kristen Metcalfe of Embry-Riddle would technically get a D2 qualifier, but would run faster at another meet later in the season.

Ajee’ Wilson would get an $8000 payday, picking up the $1000 flat track world record bonus in addition to the sub 2:03 bonus.

--  Moline, Georganne – Adidas - DNF

2018 Recap

2018 Camel City Women's 800m Race Video

The women’s Camel City Elite 800m presented by Total Sports had a lot of movement in the field in the month leading up to the race.  First, headliner Melissa Bishop withdrew for what ultimately was identified as a new addition to her family as she was pregnant!  She was set to be replaced by Shea Collinsworth of Oregon Track Club Elite, only to see her withdraw due to an infected blister.  Ultimately, Hanna Hermansson of Craft and Sweden would take the last place in this field.

On race day, Georganne Moline was hired as the pacemaker to take the women out in 58-59 seconds for 400m.  Moline had run 52 seconds for 400m indoors a few weeks earlier, and appeared to overcompensate a bit and would hit 400m in only 61.6.  Despite the slow pace, the field was still strung out with Hermansson followed by Green, Segrave and Pocratsky.  Moline would end up staying in to 600m and picked up the third 200m, which she ran in 30.2 to hit 600m in 1:31.89.

When Moline stepped off past 600m, Hermansson was still leading with a slight gap on Hanna Green.  Green would draw even with Hermansson with about 80m to go and overtake her before the final straightaway.  Green would pick up the win, but also the $1000 bonus to the winner for breaking 2:03.

Rachel Pocratsky of Virginia Tech would finish in 3rd place, followed by Abike Egbeniyi of Middle Tennessee State.  Both of their times would be NCAA qualifiers, but Pocratsky would run faster later in the season to improve her qualifying mark.

1.  Green, Hanna - Nike Oregon Track Club Elite - 2:02.58 ($7000)
2.  Hermansson, Hanna - Craft - 2:02.98 ($4000)

2017 Recap

2017 Women's Camel City 800m Race Video

This year's race featured the defending champion, Melissa Bishop.  Bishop was the 2015 IAAF World Champs silver medalist in this event, and also finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics.  At last year's Camel City Elite, she shattered the facility record by over two seconds with her 2:02.10.  Could she break it again?

Kendra Chambers of Texas Elite Track Club was set to handle the pacing duties.  There was some confusion at the start as to when and where she could break into the first lane.  As a result, Bishop would take over just past the 200m mark and lead them through 400m at 59.2 seconds.  Chambers had the option to stay in the race, but was battling a cold that would turn out to be bronchitis and would drop out after 450m.

Hanna Green would take control of second place behind Bishop and lead the second group.  Green didn't give up any distance from 400-600m.  Green would actually make up some ground on Bishop over the last 200m, but she had spotted her too much over the first 400m to catch her.  Bishop would miss the facility record, running 2:02.49.  Green's time of 2:03.31 would be the fastest ever run by a collegian at JDL Fast Track and would easily qualify her for the NCAA indoor championships.

Behind Green, Ce'Aira Brown of Hoka One One would finish third.  Agnes Abu of Middle Tennessee State would finish fourth in a time that would have qualified her for the NCAA championships, except she would go on to run even faster later in the season for her official qualifying mark.

2016

2016 Camel City 800m Race Video

Nearly every one of the distance races this year lost at least one prominent competitor, and the women's 800 was no exception.  Defending champ Jenna Westaway scratched less than a week before the race.  We were fortunate to replace her with former NCAA champ Laura Roesler.  Then, along with the rest of her Virginia Tech teammates, NCAA All-American Hanna Green also scratched from her race within hours of the start.

But that by no means lessened the action on the track.  Former Duke star Abby Farley handled the pacemaking duties and took them out through 400m in just under 60 seconds.  By 600m, World Champs silver medalist Melissa Bishop had a nearly 1 second lead on Phoebe Wright.  Bishop would extend her lead and win by over 1 second in 2:02.10, taking over 2 seconds off the facility record.  Roesler would close the best over the last 200m and overtake Wright for second.

Anima Banks of Duke would better the collegiate facility record, while NAIA runner Hannah Segrave of Milligan College would get her NAIA qualifier in this race.

2015 Camel City 800 Video

The women in this year’s race were battling for a $2000/$1000/$500 prize purse, with a $1000 bonus for breaking Kampf’s facility record.  Melissa Salerno handled the pacing duties of this race and would later pace the women’s mile on the same day.  She took the pace through 400m in almost exactly 60 seconds with about a 6-8m lead on Wright and Jenna Westaway of Brooks Running Canada.

Westaway would take the lead with just over a lap to go.  Thomas would also go by Wright on the backstretch, but Wright would charge back by her coming off the final turn.  Westaway would hold off the hard charging Wright for the victory.

Behind them, Hanna Green of Virginia Tech would overtake Geena Lara for fourth.  Green’s time of 2:06.62 would convert to 2:05.18 for NCAA qualifying purposes.  Although that time would not end up getting Green into the NCAA indoor meet, she later ran 2:03.43 at the ACC indoor meet to qualify.

2014

2014 Camel City 800 Video

The inaugural year of the women’s 800 at Camel City Elite was the closest finish we have seen in any Camel City Elite race, as Heather Kampf and Phoebe Wright were separated by only 0.01 of a second.  With $2000 on the line thanks to the Camel City Crowd Fund, all the cards were on the table.

Ericka Charles handled the pacemaking duties in this one.  Kampf and Wright would pace the pacer just after 400m and start to separate themselves from the rest of the field.   Kampf and Wright would run 1-2 the entire race.  Coming off the final turn, Wright made a final push for the line but it wasn’t enough as Kampf held her off for the win.

A little further back, Elizabeth Whelan of North Carolina would finish fourth in 2:07.03, which converted to 2:05.59 for NCAA qualifying purposes.  She would ultimately qualify for NCAAs in this race and the mile, but would elect to race the mile at NCAAs instead.
